Compare the FitBoutique Platform Extender with a standard reformer platform. Learn when an extender adds real value and when a larger reformer like the Mega XL is the better investment.
Quick answer
The FitBoutique Platform Extender adds a padded, non-slip surface that doubles your reformer's foot-end area for kneeling, standing, and lunging exercises. It is a cost-effective upgrade for most home users, but if you are tall, advanced, or running a studio, a longer reformer like the Mega XL gives you that extra room permanently without the add-on.
What the Platform Extender actually changes
A standard reformer platform is roughly the length of the carriage. That is fine for lying-down work, but once you kneel, stand, or lunge, your feet often hang off the edge. The Platform Extender drops over your existing platform and doubles the surface area at the foot end. It is padded and non-slip, and its height matches the carriage so you do not feel a step. The result: you can do split lunges, kneeling side kicks, and standing Pilates moves that would otherwise be cramped or unstable.
When the extender is not enough
If you are over 6 feet tall, the extender still leaves the same carriage length. Tall users often find their shoulders or hips hit the shoulder blocks during long-lever exercises. The extender does not fix that. Similarly, advanced practitioners who do complex transitions between standing and lying positions may prefer a single continuous surface rather than a separate piece that can shift slightly. In those cases, a reformer with a longer frame, such as the Mega XL, is a cleaner solution.
Platform Extender vs standard platform: trade-offs
- Added exercise variety: The extender unlocks kneeling, standing, and lunging exercises that the standard platform cannot support. It is a low-cost way to expand your movement library without buying a new machine.
- Stability and permanence: The extender sits on top of the existing platform. While padded and non-slip, it is still a separate piece. For heavy impact or fast transitions, a single-piece longer frame is more stable. If you do a lot of dynamic standing work, test the extender with your full body weight before committing.
- Carriage length unchanged: The extender only adds space at the foot end. The carriage itself stays the same length. Tall users or those who need more shoulder clearance will still feel restricted. Measure your own height against the carriage length. If your shoulders or hips hit the blocks, the extender will not solve that.
Product facts at a glance
- Platform Extender: The Platform Extender doubles the surface area at the foot end of your reformer. It is padded, non-slip, and matched to carriage height. You can safely perform kneeling, standing, and lunging exercises that are unstable or impossible on the standard platform alone.
Platform Extender - Mega XL Reformer: The Mega XL is the longest reformer in the FitBoutique range, with an aluminium and steel frame and an 8-spring resistance system. Taller users and advanced practitioners get uninterrupted length for long-lever moves and transitions without needing an add-on platform.
